Upgrading To 10.0 Then To 2010

I am getting increasing frustrated at doing test upgrades.  I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction....my hair is short enough....I can't pull it out.

The end result is that I want to be at 2010 R3 (or SP3).

I'm doing a 2 phase upgrade - from 9.0 SP4 with 2011 Year end (version 9.0.0388).  I have now tried at least 3-4 different variations of SP/KB updates and either end up with the message in the duinstall.log file Error: Product 0 does not support upgrading from version 9.0.388.  I realize that Product 0 is Dynamics.

I've tried going to the 2012 US Payroll Year End (KB2769061) and backwards to 2011 US Payroll Year End (KB2599501) with the same result.  It checks the version and says it detected a previous version.  Check.  It starts processing the Dynamics Company table and says it needs to update the table.  Check.  I select Update and it briefly runs and comes back to the same screen.  I hit the Details button and it shows the Company Name: Dynamics Database, Current Version - 9.00.0388, New Version - 10.00.1779 and a Product ID and Table Name window, both of which are blank.  My only option is to close.  It then returns me to the Update System Tables screen.

I'm at my Friday wit's end right now.

Can anyone shed light on what I'm doing incorrectly?
