Management Reporter - Secure SharePoint linked reports

Hello,

I am currently tasked with finding a secure option for securing the bit stream of reports for Management Reporter 2012 links on SharePoint.  When I sniff the traffic coming across the wire I can read these reports in native format.  How do other customers ensure that traffic traversing the WAN/LAN on these report links is encrypted so that the report data cannot be read?  Microsoft states you cannot SSL secure the custom port it uses.  I understand authentication is required to view the report but that does nothing to ensure the report is secure from view with sniffers.  What am I missing?
