Management Reporter 2012 - Pointing to 2 Instances of SQL

Hi All -

This may be a very simplistic question, but as we have not tried it before, I figured I would reach out. We have a client that has 2 instances of SQL. Both instances of SQL sit on the same server. One hosts their production GP environment and one hosts their test GP environment. They have MR2012 RU5 currently installed that is using a GP Legacy connection. The MR2012 Server instance is installed on the SQL server which houses the 2 GP environments. The production GP environment companies have been imported into MR2012.

The client now wants to use MR2012 with their test GP environment as well. This is where I get into hypotheticals. Here are my questions:

  • What is the best practice to accomplish this?
  • Can I create a second connection (Legacy or DataMart) to the test instance of SQL?
  • Can I install a second instance of MR2012 Server on the same SQL server and point it to the test instance of SQL?
  • How do I handle the MR2012 client installs as they all currently point to http://<servername>:4712? (we want the users to be able to point to both)
    • If I go the second instance of MR2012 route, do I have to declare a different port number?
    • What would the MR2012 client URL look like? http://<server name>\<SQL instance>:<port #> ???

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated as this is foreign territory to us.

Cheers,

James.
